As a crucial part of its mission, SI provides artist-led and artist-driven education and community programs for learners of all ages—from children and their caregivers to teens, young adults, adults, and seniors. Through meaningful partnerships with community organizations, our programs engage participants directly with contemporary art and artists, foster dialogue through collaboration and experiences in artmaking, and connect urgent issues with creative exploration by reflecting on process and place.

Our Teen Class and Teen Council for young people ages 15–21 explore contemporary art, artmaking, inquiry, and leadership. These paid opportunities provide a safe space where teens and young adults can grow individually and collectively. Starting in 2025, we have expanded our offerings to support young people up to 26 years old through our Young Adult Arts Immersion Cohort (YAAIC).
Adult programs promote multigenerational learning where adults at all stages in their lives, from 18 to 108+ years old, can come together to think critically about topics being explored by living artists today and dive more deeply into artistic practice.
Schools and university groups are welcome to visit SI in a self-guided or guided capacity. As always, it is free to visit and tour SI!
Since its move to the East Village in 2018, SI has collaborated with neighborhood arts and civic-centered organizations to offer art-centered programs to both an East Village–based and broader New York City audience. Through partnerships, we seek to be a locally engaged organization and a resource for the many communities that live, work, and play around us.
